The Benefits Of Wearing A Face Mask

Updated: Aug 25, 2020

The CDC recommends “wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain”.

Should I wear a face mask? In many countries across the world, wearing masks in public has now become mandatory. In Australia, the verdict is still out on whether face masks are effective in stopping the spread of COVID-19 and it is not compulsory to wear masks in Australia. However, with the recent rise in cases in Victoria, many are choosing to wear masks when out in public. So, should you wear a face mask? Which ones are the best? And how do you wear them properly?

Who is protected when you wear a mask? The benefits of wearing a mask are two-fold. Firstly, a mask prevents someone who has the virus from emitting the virus into the air around them. They help contain droplets expelled when a sick person coughs or sneezes. At the same time, it could protect another person from inhaling contaminated air or being sprayed by coughs and sneezes.

What are the risks associated with wearing a mask? It is imperative that masks are worn correctly and wearing them incorrectly could cause a fall sense of security and prove to be more dangerous. People may also contaminate themselves with the virus when they take the mask off or pull it down to eat or drink. Masks are less effective if they are damp or damaged. It is not recommended to use P2 or N95 masks as they are difficult to put on and take off safely

How do I use a mask properly?

  • Wash your hands before putting on the mask

  • Make sure it covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly under your chin, over the bridge of your nose and against the sides of your face.

  • Do not touch the front of the mask while it is on or when removing it (and if you do so accidentally, wash or clean your hands immediately)

  • Wash your hands after removing your mask

  • Make sure you wash your mask regularly and it is recommended to have a few masks in rotation to ensure you always have a fresh, clean one handy.
